Medicaid Billing for Speech-Language Therapy Conducted Via Telepractice in Montana

Great news β€” Montana Medicaid will reimburse for speech-language therapy services conducted via telemedicine.

In June, 2014, the Montana State Administrative Rule (ARMS) added the Provision of Telepractice Services (24.222.904) to state that β€œthe provision of speech-language pathology or audiology services in this state through telepractice, regardless of the physical location of the speech-language pathologist or audiologist, constitutes the practice of speech-language pathology or audiology, and is subject to state licensure requirements and regulation by the board.”

For Medicaid billing, the correct way to code for this service is to append a modifier of β€œGQ” to the covered code to show it was done as telehealth. This modifier is informational only and does not affect payment in any way; the code will still pay the same.
