Clinician Spotlight: Jason M. - PresenceLearning

Jason M., M.A., CCC-SLP, has been a speech pathologist for 15 years. He attended Appalachian State University as an undergraduate and completed his Masters degree at South Carolina State University. Jason is currently working on his Doctorate in Education. Jason has been an SLP in the PL Care Network since 2016.

How has the PL online platform enabled you to help your students and the schools you serve in new ways?

The PresenceLearning Platform has provided me with the opportunity to help students in ways that I never before thought were possible. Using the online library allows me to access an almost infinite array of resources, activities, and materials to use with my students. Students love using technology and are enthusiastic to learn in a digital classroom environment. Students benefit from exposure to video conferencing and utilization of 21st century technology. These skills are becoming mandatory in our society including higher education institutions. 

Can you tell us a little about how you collaborate with teachers and other school staff members?

The PresenceLearning platform makes collaboration with all parties effortless. Video conferencing in addition to emails, texts, and audio phone conferences makes communication and collaboration convenient and accessible for all stakeholders. Classroom teachers are able to easily collaborate with professionals throughout the nation. Increased communication and collaboration between educators, professionals, therapists, and parents benefits students immeasurably. 

How do you build trust and rapport with parents? 

Students who excitedly tell their families of the wonderful and educational activities in which they participate during their visit to the PresenceLearning Platform (digital classroom) are teletherapy’s best advocates. Parents appreciate seeing their kids showing enthusiasm for learning. Students enjoy technology and parents realize students utilizing technology are more prepared for today’s educational demands. The increased opportunities for communication help me to build trust and rapport with parents. And the many technologies available such as video conferencing, texts, emails, and apps help me to increase parent, teacher, therapist collaboration by eliminating travel difficulties and minimizing scheduling conflicts. 

What advice would you give districts considering online therapy?

Thank you for considering teletherapy for the benefit of your students. Utilizing 21st century technology and providing PL’s excellent network of therapists to your students will increase their opportunity for success. Teletherapy provides expert instruction utilizing a state-of-the-art platform that motivates students to participate. And teletherapy offers an innovative solution to serving students with special needs that is consistent with the results-based model expected by schools today.
